Private Stock Singles 1975-76L’L’LucyLucy’s a woman who lives just for kicks, And I guess I’ll never change her. Does what she wants ’till she’s learned all the tricks No, I’ll never rearrange her.
Chorus La La Lucy, La La La Lucy, I’m telling you what you gonna do. La La Lucy, La La La Lucy, It’s all over for you, Don’t you know that it’s true because You know I told you once before, No messin’ or you’re out that door. I mean and I meant it then, Ain’t gonna take you woman back again. La La Lucy, La La La Lucy, It’s all over for you, don’t you know that it’s true.
Her time will come when she’s out on her own, She won’t have me to depend on. Then she’ll find out as she sits all alone, She’s got no love to lean on.
Guitar solo
You know I told you once before, No messin’ or you’re out that door. I mean and I meant it then, Ain’t gonna take you woman back again.
Repeat Chorus to fade
Writen by Ray Stiles and Rob Davis (Evolution Music/Island Music) Released September 1975 on Private Stock - PVT41 B-side: My Love Is Your Love
The band’s first single for Private Stock. A rocky number writen by Ray and Rob in the Chinn and Chapman style. Reached number 10 in the UK charts.
My Love Is Your Love
If you should go it will break my heart I know baby Just come around. Love can’t be found by fooling round so maybe Love is getting stronger Just can’t wait much longer
Chorus: My love is your love Your love is my love Sharing, caring everyday My love is your love Your love is my love We can stay in love this way
Hearing your name just turns my heart to flame now darling Why don’t you come? I’m standing here I’m yours my dear Oh how can I get to you? You know I’m waiting for you
Chorus Guitar break
Love is getting strong Just can’t wait much longer
Chorus - repeat to fade
Written by Rob Davis and Ray Stiles (Evolution Music/Island Music Ltd) Released September 1975 as the b-side of L’L’Lucy (Private Stock PVT41)
Return to the top of this page Show Me You’re A WomanI hurt your feelings, when I said you’re kinda green, Of an age that’s inbetween, and you don’t know what love means. You think you love, maybe love has made you blind, ’Cos your full of new emotions of a young and foolish kind.
Chorus Show me you’re a woman, ’Cos a woman has the kind of love I’m needing. Show me you’re a woman, And I’ll show you that I’m a man. Just give me what I’m after, It’s a smile and the sound of your girlish laughter. When you are a woman, I’m your man.
Don’t try to fool me ’cos I know about your age, And it’s written on a page of the memories that I save. I know you’re only trying hard to do what’s right, But you’re young and so you might have to wait for Cupid’s bite.
Chorus Repeat Chorus to fade
Writen by Phil Wainman and John Goodison (Evolution Music/Island Music) Released November 1975 on Private Stock - PVT45 B-side: Don’t You Know
Taken from the album “Use Your Imagination”, this was the follow up single to L’L’Lucy. The band felt they needed a romantic song and producer Phil Wainman and John Goddison came up with this.
Don’t You KnowI can see clearly now the way it’s gonna go I can see my world come and go Though the road begins to wind In the distance there’s a sign. Don’t you know I've been away too long.
Gone are those hazy days that clouded up my mind. All of those bad times left behind. Can’t you see I have to roam? But now I’m coming home Don’t you know I’ve been away too long
I’ve seen faces, places you may never see. Done most things I never thought I’d do Making like those bright lights Sleeping days and long nights Now I know I must go where I belong To the place that’s waiting for me Don’t you know it’s waiting for me? Oh, I know that I’ve been lonely too long.
I’m gonna get myself a place back in the sun Don’t have to hide, just gotta run. Though this life is getting older And I’m seeing things much bolder Don’t you know I've been away too long
Written by Rob Davis and Ray Stiles (Evolution Music/Island Music Ltd) Released November 1975 as the b-side of Show Me You’re A Woman (Private Stock PVT45)
Return to the top of this page Shake It DownWon’t you get up on your feet, hear that music sounding sweet, You’ll kinda like it (kinda like it). Move your body round the floor, can’t you give it any more? Now don’t you fight it (don’t you fight it).
Shake it down. Shake it down.
Foxy lady over there, bet she knows when and where, She can make it (she can make it). When she gets close to me, there’s no place I’d rather be, No, I can’t take it (I can’t take it)
Shake it down. Shake it down. Shake it. Shake it.
Everybody’s on the move, tell me what you’ve gotta loose, Think about it (think about it). Let the music turn you on ’cause the night will soon be gone, Get down and shout it (down and shout it).
Shake it down. Shake it down Repeat to fade
Writen by Ray Stiles and Rob Davis (Evolution Music/Island Music) Released April 1976 on Private Stock - PVT65 B-side: Laugh, Live, Love
Rob and Ray dable in disco! A change of direction just failed to make the top ten.
Laugh, Live, LoveLaugh - dance me on your finger Live - and I love to linger Love - all I need is you now give it to me. Laugh - and I’m laughing with you Live - I can’t live without you Love - all you need is me now just wait and see
Don’t you know that I’m losing sleep at night The way I’m feeling just don’t seem right Seems the things that you do and my feelings for you Are never gonna change Gonna tell the world about it We just gotta laugh, live and love.
Laugh - don’t put me down Live - ’cos I’ve been around Love - I found out what it’s all about Laugh - so don’t deceive me Live - and you’ll believe me Love - when I tell you I need you baby
I don’t know where my life will lead tonight Heaven knows where you shine your love light Seems the things that you do and my feelings for you Are never gonna change Gonna tell the world about it We’re just gotta laugh, live and love.

Return to the top of this page Nite On The TilesI couldn’t wait, she came in late She wasn’t there, I didn’t care. I’m sinking low, where can I go? Has no one goit a bed to share?
I spent a night on the tiles. A night on the tiles.
Here comes the day, what can I say, She really knows that I’ve been cheating. The night was long, she came on strong, It’s morning that we’ll soon be greeting.
I spent a night on the tiles. A night on the tiles.
If only I could lay with you by me, I’d never leave your side again. You’d make me feel a man and then...
She left for good, I knew she would. There’s nothing for me here at all. Why did she go, I’ll never know, How come she had to be so cruel.
I spent a night on the tiles. A night on the tiles.
Writen by Ray Stiles and Rob Davis (Chappell Music) Released September 1976 on Private Stock - PVT80 B-side: Time And Again
Tacken from “It’s Better Than Working” - a very heavy track. As far removed from their previous single as you could get. Failed to chart.
Time And AgainYou don’t know what you mean to me. I think about you endlessly. I tried to tell you that I’m falling . Time and again, Time and again.
You’re in my dreams both night and day They bring you near when you’re away Tried to tell you that I'm falling. Time and again, Time and again.
Once was a time I thought you knew, But I was wrong. There must be something that I can do or say. What can I do to drive the blues away. People they say that I am just hanging on Must be foolish to hurt myself this way. Time and again I’ve only ever been your friend Time and again I’ll wait for you.
Don’t you know that I will stay with you forever Baby don’t you know it’s true - I love you. You don’t know what you mean to me, I think about you endlessly. I tried to tell you that I love. Time and again Time and again Time and again Time and again
Written by Rob Davis and Ray Stiles (Evolution Music/Island Music Ltd) Released September 1976 as the b-side of Nite On The Tiles (Private Stock PVT80)
About as far removed from the b-side as you could get, this 20s style tune shows just how diverse the band, and Rob and Ray in partiuclar, were.
Return to the top of this page Lean On MeSometimes in our lives, we all have pain, We all have sorrow. But, if we are wise, we know that there’s always tomorrow. Please, swollow your pride, if I have faith you need to borrow. For, no one can feel those of your needs that you won’t let show.
Just call on me brother if you need a hand We all need somebody to lean on. Just might have a problem that you’ll understand. We all need somebody to lean on
Lean on me when you’re not strong I’ll be your friend, I’ll help you carry on. For it won’t be long till I’m gonna need somebody to lean on.
Just call on me brother if you need a hand We all need somebody to lean on. Just might have a problem that you’ll understand. We all need somebody to lean on
Call me. I want you to call me. Oh please call me. You know you gotta call me.
You carry that load, you’ll have to bear, That you can’t carry. I’m right up that road, I’ll share your load, If you’ll just call me.
So, when your not strong I’ll be your friend, I’ll help you carry on. For it won’t be long, I’m gonna need somebody to lean on.
Writen by Bill Withers (EMI music publishing Ltd) Released November 1976 on Private Stock - PVT85 B-side: Grecian Lament
An old Bill Withers song, this was MUD’s last UK top ten hit - it reached number 7. Also the last single released on Private Stock whilst the band were still contracted to the lable.
Beating Round The BushDon’t beat around the bush c’mon tell me what you want from me. I ain’t a man to push but our love’s gone yes siree. Crazy things that you do, make me sad, make me blue. You’ve been two timing honey, trying to make a fool out of me.
Chorus You’ve been beating round the bush, And I ain’t a man to push no. But you’ve done wrong by me. Don’t you know you've been beating round the bush And I ain’t a man to push no, But you’ve done wrong by me, yeah. Beating round the bush.
Oh, buddy can’t you see you took my cutie chickadee, Guess I always knew she’d put a dark cloud over me. So it’s you, it ain’t me, take a look and you’ll see, She’s a two timin’ woman, She’s gone and made a fool out of me, yeah.
Chorus Repeat chorus to end
